About us
Privacy help that's calm and honest
Tor Browser Guide is an independent, beginner-friendly resource about the Tor Browser and online privacy. We explain what Tor does, how to use it safely, and what to do when something goes wrong, in plain English and without hype.
Why this site exists
Most information about Tor falls into two camps: technical documentation written for experts, or scary headlines about the “dark web.” Neither helps an ordinary person who just wants to browse privately, or someone on a censored network who simply needs Tor to connect. We write for those people. Every guide assumes no background knowledge and gets to the practical answer quickly.
How we write our guides
-
We start from official sources
Our guides are built on the Tor Project's own documentation (the Tor Support portal, the Tor Browser manual, and the Tor Blog), plus independent sources such as the EFF and OONI for questions about law and censorship.
-
We're honest about limits
Tor is a powerful privacy tool, but it isn't magic. We say clearly what it does not protect against, and we never promise “total anonymity.”
-
We keep guides up to date
Tor Browser changes, and so does censorship. We review our guides regularly, update them when menus, features, or recommendations change, and show the date of the last update.
-
We only point you to official downloads
Every download link on this site leads to the official torproject.org/download page. We never host copies of Tor Browser or link to unofficial mirrors.
-
No legal advice
Our articles about the law are general information to help you understand the landscape, not legal advice for your situation. Laws vary by country and change over time.
Independent, with nothing to sell
We are not affiliated with the Tor Project. “Tor” and the onion logo are trademarks of the Tor Project, Inc. We don't sell VPNs or any other product. There are no ads, no affiliate links, and no sponsored posts, so when we say you probably don't need a VPN with Tor, nobody pays us to say otherwise. If you'd like to support Tor itself, the best place to do that is the Tor Project, a non-profit.
We practice what we preach
This site runs no analytics, no advertising trackers, and no third-party scripts of our own, and it works fine in the Tor Browser at its strictest security level. Details are in our privacy policy.
